 The following guide to help Food and Function  caterers and coordinators understand the special  dietary requirements of their Muslim customers

What does Halal mean? 

❖ Halal is an Arabic word, meaning lawful, and is the Islamic dietary law that   identifies food permitted for Muslims. 

❖ Non-halal is also referred to in Arabic as Haram (meaning not permissible) ❖ Alcohol and pork products are NOT permitted (not HALAL) including pork   lard, ham and bacon) 

❖ For processed foods to be Halal, they must be free of alcohol and pork,  and must not have come into contact with either of them during the   manufacturing process.

Non-Halal FOOD ADDITIVES – E Numbers

FOOD ADDITIVES - E Numbers

E Numbers are a specific numbering system  to identify food additives used in food industry. These E Numbers are not formulated  based on Sources of Food additives. Same  E Number is assigned to a food additive de rived from a Halal source or Haraam source.  Halal status of a food additive cannot be decided based only on the E Number. It would  be difficult for the common person to distinguish what is Halal. Therefore, there is a  need for a stringent screening of the raw materials used for respective status. 

Only ingredients classified as additives have  an E Code Number. Naturally occurring ingredients do not eg: Gelatine, sugar, whey  etc.
